Dental Crowns
What Are Dental Crowns?
Traditional dental crowns are tooth-shaped restorations that cover natural teeth. Crowns can be made from a variety of dental materials, including porcelain, zirconia, and IPS e.max®. At our Bloomington dentistry practice, Drs. David D. Wyse and Jay W. Chrisman use crowns to:
- Repair large cavities
- Reinforce weakened teeth
- Restore chipped, cracked, or fractured teeth
- Improve the appearance of discolored teeth
- Cover teeth after root canal therapy
Our dentists also offer dental implant-supported crowns. A dental implant-supported crown is a prosthetic tooth that can be attached to a dental implant to replace a missing natural tooth. We refer patients to the area's best oral surgeons for dental implant placement.

The Dental Crown Timeline
Dental Crown Aftercare
To maintain your new dental crown, it is important to practice good oral hygiene. Patients should brush at least twice daily and floss once a day. In addition, you should attend regular exams and cleanings at our office so our doctors can monitor the health of your restored tooth.
Individuals who suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding) should invest in a nightguard to protect their teeth from breakage, erosion, and other forms of damage. With proper care, a porcelain dental crown can last for 10 to 15 years on average, and sometimes even longer.
The Cost of Dental Crowns
At Wyse Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, a single crown usually costs between $1,300 and $1,600. Insurance will typically contribute to the cost of a crown, and we offer financing options that can help you afford any uncovered costs.

Root Canal Therapy
Root canal treatment is often the only way to save an infected tooth. While many patients are anxious about root canal therapy, in reality, it's a quick and comfortable procedure that Drs. Chrisman and Wyse can perform in our own office. Root canal treatment usually concludes with the placement of a dental crown.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are tiny posts, typically made of titanium, that replace natural tooth roots and provide secure support for crowns, bridges, or dentures. Implants are modern dentistry's best solution to tooth loss because they fuse naturally with the jawbone, preventing bone atrophy and keeping restorations in place.
Dental Veneers
If you are interested in a crown for purely cosmetic reasons, a porcelain veneer may be a more conservative option that can work just as well. While crowns completely encapsulate teeth, veneers attach to the visible surfaces of teeth. Veneers can obscure aesthetic imperfections to totally transform your smile.
