Safe and Gentle Pediatric Dentistry
Just like adults, children should attend regular dental checkups to make sure their teeth are clean and healthy. Pediatric dentistry is crucial for developing positive lifelong oral health habits. At Wyse Family & Cosmetic Dentistry in Bloomington, IL, we see children as young as four years old. Dr. David Wyse and Dr. Jay Chrisman offer a wide range of pediatric services, such as fluoride treatments and dental sealants. During your appointment, we can also provide you with advice on how to brush and floss your child’s teeth to protect against decay and other oral health concerns.
Our Pediatric Services
In addition to biannual pediatric cleanings and examinations, we also offer a variety of other services for our young patients:
Topical Fluoride
One of the best ways to protect your child’s teeth against cavities is regular fluoride treatments. The enamel on your child’s teeth is weaker than the enamel on adult teeth, making them more vulnerable to decay. At our office, we offer safe and effective topical fluoride treatments to make enamel more resistant to decay.
Dental Sealants
A sealant is a thin plastic coating that adheres to the tooth, shielding the surface from bacteria. For most young patients, we recommend placing sealants on their molars as soon as they erupt. The chewing surfaces of the back teeth have several little grooves, pits, and fissures. It is easier for bacteria to gather in these areas, which can lead to more severe decay. Dr. Wyse or Dr. Chrisman can apply dental sealants to the tops of your child’s teeth to seal grooves and protect against cavities.
Fillings
Decay and cavities are highly common with young children. According to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), over 40 percent of children between ages two and 11 develop cavities in their primary teeth. If your child has a cavity, our doctors can place a dental filling to replace decayed tissue and maintain oral health.
At Wyse Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, your child's comfort is important to us.
Dental Bonding
If your child has minor chips or fractures in their teeth, we can restore their smiles with tooth-colored bonding material. We use custom shading to help ensure the material blends seamlessly into their smiles.
Pediatric Crowns
In cases of fractures or advanced decay, a dental crown may be necessary to protect your child’s tooth. A pediatric crown can restore the appearance of the tooth and prevent further damage.
Root Canal Therapy
While your child’s baby teeth are not permanent, it is important to keep them healthy and prevent them from falling out before the permanent teeth are ready to erupt. In some cases, the optimal way to save a damaged or severely decayed tooth is to perform a root canal. During this procedure, our doctors can remove the damaged or decayed portions of the tooth, both inside and out, and place a pediatric crown to protect it until the permanent tooth erupts.
Sedation Dentistry
At Wyse Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, your child's comfort is important to us. If your child is anxious, or if you are concerned about their comfort during a procedure, we can offer sedation dentistry to help them relax.
